Bank account providers will vote next month on whether or not to abolish the cheque as a payment method in the UK.
The financial services firms are likely to phase out cheques by 2018 following declining customer usage rates, the Sunday Times reported.
Although the payment method has been in use in Britain since the 18th century, it has been largely supplanted by plastic cards and cash over recent years.
Figures from UK Payments Administration show that debit and credit card use was up by 4% from 2007 to 2008, while cheque use dropped by a similar proportion
